Assessment

Unaided Work:

Presentation (5-10 slides) according to the allocated case by using the databases of medicinal register and food supplements and justifying the use of particular medicinal herb for treatment and prevention and predicting possible side effects.

Assessment Criteria:

Participation in classes - observation of safety rules and methodology during laboratory works, ability to use schemes of plant morphology and plant determiners, ability to use names of plants and terminology during classes and lectures; ability to explain the results of experiment on chemical and physical properties of biogenic substances and their basic structure; put forward conclusions based on the obtained results, ability to present materials about the goal of the action of plant biogenic substances and use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements; ability to choose medicinal plants for the treatment of prevention of diseases, ability to foresee possible side effects and participate in discussion about the use of plants in treatment and prevention.

Final Examination (Full-Time):

Test (Semester)

Final examination (Part-Time):

Learning Outcomes:

Knowledge:

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to carry out the following activities: explain the conditions for collecting, drying and storing of medicinal plants; classify plants according to their biogenic substances; justify the use of particular plants for the treatment of particular diseases (treatment of cardiovascular diseases; improvement of the functioning of digestive system; treatment of cold and skin diseases); explain their influence on human body; justify the rational use of medicinal herbs in treatment; recommend relaxing and vitamin-fortified teas for everyday use, use Latin names and terminology (in Latvian, Russian and other languages according to the native language) of medicinal plants during lectures and practical classes.

Skills:

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to carry out the following activities: recognise the most popular medicinal herbs in Latvia; classify herbs according to their action; prove the existence of biogenic substances in medicinal plants, explain the results of experiment on chemical and physical properties of biogenic substances and their basic structure; put forward conclusions based on the obtained results, make tea and infusion and use the databases of medicinal register and food supplements.

Competencies:

Upon successful completion of the course students will be able to analyse situations, logically formulate their opinion about therapeutic effect of medicinal herbs and choice of medicinal herbs depending on the goal, and anticipate side effects.
